Study Finds Sex Will Not Cause Sudden Cardiac Arrest
Sudden cardiac arrest is related to sexual activity far more frequently in men than women, study suggests.
But sex is a cause for sudden cardiac arrest.
Only 34 out of this arrests examined occurred during or within an hour of sexual intercourse, and 32 of those affected were guys.
Sumeet Chugh, of this Cedars-Sinai Heart Institute, said his study is the first to rate sexual activity as a potential trigger of cardiac arrest.
The study was presented at a meeting of the American Heart Association.
A cardiac arrest occurs when the center stops beating and malfunctions. It causes someone prevents breathing and to fall unconscious, and it's deadly unless handled with CPR.
This is different from a heart attack because the blood flows to the heart and is blocked.
It is understood that sexual activity can trigger heart attacks, but the link with arrest was formerly unknown.
His coworkers at California and Dr. Chugh examined hospital records on cases of cardiac arrest in adults between 2015 and 2002 at Portland, Oregon.
Sexual activity was associated with fewer than 1% of those cases. The huge majority were men and were more likely to become African American, middle-aged and have a history of cardiovascular disease.
The study discovered despite a spouse witnessing them, CPR was conducted in only one-third of those instances.
Dr. Chugh said: "These conclusions highlight the value of continued efforts to educate the public about the importance of bystander CPR for sudden cardiac arrest, in spite of the circumstance."
He said it shows the need for individuals to be educated about how to administer CPR.
Another study presented at the conference showed kids as young as six can learn it.
Following a heart attack or surgery, the British Heart Foundation suggests patients should typically wait four to six months before resuming sexual activity.
